A new speculation on the latest edition of Game Informer magazine has reinforced the PS3 price rollercoaster as it suggests a new (40GB) PS3 is on the cards. The magazine puts the new PS3 at $399. However, it’s just a few days back when Sony confirmed an 80GB PS3, and a $100 price-cut on 60GB version for the US, and now as per speculations, another SKU is coming with a 40GB hard-drive to the same region.
A new PS3 version takes the number (of PS3 versions) up to four in the market. Although, the magazine justifies its price tag, saying the new low-end version contains no backward compatibility, still it sounds a bit fishy. What makes Sony to think of another SKU, as there are already three consoles battling for their existence?
It’s hard to believe and doesn’t sound convincing, because -
1) Earlier, answering to the speculations regarding discontinuation of discounted PS3 in the US, SCEA’s Dave Karraker has said that they won’t be making any further announcements regarding PS3 hardware strategy in North US until the 60GB PS3 is exhausted completely
2) As the consumers are already having a best deal with a discounted 60GB PS3 and 80GB PS3, hence there is no question of introducing another PS3.
3) Being offered so many games by third party developers and Sony’s online store, it is difficult for a console to manage it all with a limited memory space of 40GB, so everyone would ask for a console with bigger hard-drive (not small).
Therefore, it makes no sense, and would be a great idiocy on the part of Sony, because they would have to throw some more bucks to develop the low-end PS3 and I am pretty sure that they will get nothing out of it. European PS3 price-cut makes some sense that can help them get out of financial low, but dreaming about another PS3 (low-end) version is ludicrous.
