Devices that will allow you to pool bandwidth for greater online gaming experience

A story in Engadget says that two startups firms - San Diego's Mushroom Networks and Seattle's WinBoost are separately working on systems that will allow consumers to share their DSL or cable connections and pool their bandwidth to improve performance. They have made devices that can aggregate multiple connections.

The difference in the system is WinBoost uses a wireless antenna that needs to be mounted externally, while Mushroom has built a device 'aggregator', which can combine both wired and wireless broadband connections to improve throughput. See the illustration above.

Now, these two companies already pointed out that they want to work with service providers. It must be noted that sharing bandwidth is a strict no-no for most telephony and cable providers. So I can see that they will be entering into some kind of contract with them in order to market it. Anyway, the onus is upon the consumers on how to use it and adhere to their providers' terms and conditions, so as Engadget says, discretion may be the key to enjoy the goodies of these devices.
