According to this report in Gamasutra sources from Nintendo Europe are now claiming that lifetime-to-date sale figures for the Nintendo DS console in Spain has beaten rival Sony PSP in terms of sales.
It has sold 425,000 units so far which is 59% of the next generation portable market. The other 41% described only as that belonging to ‘other’ next generation portable consoles. Therefore, even if we assume that this 41% is solely PSP sales, then it would indicate a lifetime figure of around 295,000 - a significantly less number than the sales of DS.
Rafael Martinez Moya-Angeler, Marketing Director of Nintendo Spain said that 100,000 additional units could have been sold over the period if there weren’t any stock supply problems that Nintendo faced.
So, finally we see a Nintendo device gaining the top position in sales at least in one country.
One might argue that the PSP was released almost six months later in Europe than the Nintendo DS, other sales results collated by market research firm AC Nielsen show that the Nintendo DS has been outselling the PSP since the week of November 13, beating it hands down in the Christmas sales as well.
