So both have an ‘i’, but that’s it as far as the rivalry between Nintendo’s DSi and Apple’s iPhone is concerned. Or so says Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo. Several industry voices cried in unison when the third iteration of the DS was released with camera et al. And the focus everywhere was on a possible rivalry between the DS and established cell phones; iPhone included. Iwata, however, denies that DSi is in competition against either iPhone or iPod Touch. He’s been quoted as saying:
It seems some people have the impression that we want to compete with cell phones or the iPod, that putting cameras or music players in our devices is out of character for us.
The fact, however, remains that cell phones and handheld gaming devices – as distinct product classes – are basically competing for a slice of users’ spare time; and of course, their pockets. Perhaps this could be a reason that the third iteration of the DS handheld has been endowed with features like two cameras, music-editing software, SD-support and so on. The DSi goes on sale in Europe and North America in April. The way sales of both the devices shape up subsequently would have a lot to say for the supposed rivalry.
