Do you know that taking aim at your rival with a virtual sniper gun or a rocket launcher in a FPS game can improve your vision? Yes! Some researchers at the University of Rochester have given rise to a new finding. According to the researchers, people who played action videogames for a few hours a day over the span of a month resulted in an improvement in their eyesight by around 20%.

An apt experiment was done with two groups playing two different games; one group played Tetris (puzzle genre) while the other one, Unreal Tournament (FPS game) for just 30 hours and after analyzing the vision of players of both groups, the researchers found a substantial increase in spatial resolution of vision of players playing FPS as compared to players who played puzzle game. They could see the cluttered figures portrayed on the eye chart more clearly as compared to the others playing puzzle game.
How do action games sharpen eyesight?
Daphne Bavelier, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at University of Rochester, educating about the whole phenomenon says that when gamers play an action game, they are changing their brain's pathway responsible for visual processing. These games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts to it.

The new applicability of video games in field of optics will surely show its usability to develop visual acuity of people through videogame software designed to enhance the capability of one to identify objects quickly and also will account for a hike in videogame business as the demand of videogames will escalate.
That would be a good enough excuse for the kids to play the action games.....!
