Free mobile game aims at raising awareness about endangered gorillas

Campaigners for preservation of endangered species have found a novel way to raise public awareness about the plight of endangered gorillas in the jungles of northern Rwanda. By offering a free, downloadable mobile phone game called Silverback, conservationists are hoping to educate people by simulating the lives of the majestic but endangered beast in their natural habitat in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. The game, which was first created in 2003 by designer Ken Banks in collaboration with Flora And Fauna International (FFI), has been revamped and re-released to let players experience the trials and tribulations the mountain gorillas face while trying to survive a whole host of dangers including the elements of nature, predators of the jungle, hostility from rival silverbacks, poachers as well as the threat of loss of habitat with the expansion of human settlement. The developers of the game are hoping that this engaging yet educational game 'might then lead a player from a point of total ignorance to a point of total engagement,' whereby ordinary folks might be encouraged to spend time and money for the cause more willingly.
