You plan for a game’s release months in advance and along comes an overzealous retailer and ruins all the preparation. This is exactly what has happened with Stardock’s release of Demigod, which was supposed to hits shelves on Tuesday. Instead, GameStop (for some other-worldly reason) decided to start selling copies earlier than was proposed. So now Stardock has had to change its plans considerably. Demigod’s developer Impulse has released the digital version of the game for $39.95 (£26.89) before it officially goes on retail sale. Here’s what Stardock’s CEO Brand Wardell said about the decision:
…we have elected to make the digitally distributed version available today with beta testers and pre-order customers getting it immediately (as in right now). Those who have legally purchased the game can get the 0-day update that has all the game play changes that the beta group asked for, multiplayer match-making, and LAN support.
Wardell also went on to say that this may, in theory, lead to maximum piracy of the title; Demigod has already made it online from off the shelves of GameStop it is believed. He also complained about the loss of “weekend to recover” because of the actions of GameStop. GameStop, meanwhile, hasn’t come out to explain its actions. Whether deliberate or not, they sure seem to have caused a lot of trouble to all involved.
