Gates: 'We will play again should we fail'

Chairman of Microsoft Corp Bill Gates has declared that MS will fight to the finish. He said the company is not going to back down even if the launch of its Xbox 360 video game console fails to propel it to first place in the $25 billion global market.

He said; 'We will play again' in a telephonic conversation with Reuters ahead of the launch of Xbox 360. It is an open war between the runaway market leader in gaming consoles - Sony and MS the major gaming console makers to sell a next-generation machine with the launch of Xbox 360.

Gates said, "We learned a lot in the first round. We've got a chance not just to have higher market share, but also to grow the size of this market substantially. Xbox 360 will be better than the next-generation PlayStation 3 console from Sony. Sony's PlayStation 2 is estimated to now control about 70 percent of the global market. In terms of how we've balanced technology in the machine, we feel certain we've done a better job than Sony'.

He further added that it would not be before the end of next year that people would know the difference between Xbox 360 and Sony's upcoming console (that is slated to be released sometime in mid-2006).

With Gates saying such things, one can't help but sit up and take notice. If he said that it generally means that MS is really, really serious. MS entered the console market in 2001 and grabbed the No. 2 position despite adversities. Sony's PlayStation 2 had a one-year headstart and consumers were not sure that software corporation would do video games well or commit to a new market and be successful as it was Windows OS.

Microsoft has always been the champions when it comes to making others' ideas their very own and then makes a killing in the field. We simply cannot afford to underestimate the resolve of Bill Gates & Co. They are a determined lot and tenacious like hell. Sony would ignore his comments at its own peril.
