Xbox Live allows users to download among other things, television and movies (as if you didn’t know it already). The popularity ratings of this service have never been too high. But Microsoft thinks otherwise and in a bid to improve the content on Xbox 360 has roped in Peter Safran, the veteran Hollywood producer and talent manager.
Safran has been asked to produce bite-sized shows specifically targeted at Xbox’s demographic. Microsoft has asked Safran’s Company to produce 10-minute clips of various genres like horror, comedy and so on. These clips could be made available as soon as fall this year and will be aired exclusively on Xbox 360, from where they will move on to other media.
Microsoft Xbox 360 Live entertainment’s global marketing manager for programming, Scott Nocas describes this deal as the “first of many.” This is definitely good news for the 10 million or so users who have signed up for the Xbox Live service. Having taken a beating from PS3 and Wii, at least Microsoft is looking to compete on fronts other than gaming. But don’t hope for major movie stars in the flicks cause Safran has already denied this.
