China has a huge population of online gamers, numbering millions, and the weekend demonstration proved the passion they carry. Some ten thousand Chinese protestors staged a demonstration on the weekend after a motif resembling a Hinomaru or “rising sun” Japanese flag was seen on a wall at a government office.

The weapons-based martial arts video game ‘The Fantasy of the Journey West’ was topping the charts however the protests were not sanctioned by Chinese authorities. That’s because the demonstration took place inside a virtual world and the protestors were not people, but avatars - online representations of human game players.

You can see a crowd of activists carrying posters condemning the use of the much-despised symbol. It is based on real world rules set by the Chinese Government’s National Internet Supervisory Bureau, according to NetEase. NetEase, which is part owned by a Chinese millionaire William Ding, defended the use of the sun motif, saying it was based on an ancient Chinese painting called ‘Sunrise in the East’.
