This is turning out to be a major crisis for South Korean online gamers. Almost 250,000 cases reported on identity theft of Korean online gamers. What's more, many of the stolen identities are being used in gaming 'farms' in China as part of a $1b a year black market in cash and items from online games.
China racketeers running online gaming 'farms' have been particularly blamed. What happens is that in the farms, armies of lowly paid workers work 14-hour shifts performing repetitive tasks in online games in order to generate gold and other valuable items.
These items can then be sold to players overseas for hard cash. Therefore, by spending a little money, one can get things that require 1000s of hours of hard gaming work to accumulate enough resources to acquire.
