An interview with Jonathan Metts from Nintendo World Report

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Meteos: Disney Magic, Disney Pixar's Cars; if I am not wrong, then these are fewest of neophytes in the infinitely big gaming world that you have had enjoyed a lot on your gaming handhelds or consoles. You keep coming onto the games again and again but what really makes your mind either to go for that game or not are game reviewers who in just few hundred words provide you the profundity of a game. Jonathan Metts is one of those who find pleasure in reviewing different games.

Here are few questions that we asked Jonathan Metts (Reviews Editor) Nintendoworldreport; an insignia what Jonathan shared with us:

Q. Who is Jonathan Metts outside gaming-world?

Ans. I'm a Ph.D. student in aerospace engineering, researching space suit technology. I'm also a musician who plays harmonica and vocals. I love watching movies and reading novels. Most of my friends are not gamers, and I actually don't like to talk about games "in real life" because I get my fill of it working on the website.

Q. How do you choose a game for review? (Being a Reviews-Editor)

Ans. We keep a list of upcoming games and ask staff members to sign up for them. I sometimes suggest games for certain people based on their expertise, but mostly it's a voluntary system and people review what they're interested in. As for myself, I try not to monopolize all the best games, so I concentrate on games that I really want but probably other staff members would not like as much.

Q. Do you review next-gen titles also (apart from PC, fifth and sixth generation titles)?

Ans. We review games on all Nintendo platforms. Of course, that's mostly Wii and DS now, as there are no more major GameCube and GBA games coming out.

Q. What is the basis of assigning score to your Review?

Ans. Other people on our staff have their own ways of doing it, but personally, I write the entire review before assigning any scores, and in fact I try not to even think about numbers until the end. That lets me look back at what I have written and think about what scores would match up to the text of the review.

Q. You hardly put any image in your review. Why?

Ans. We consider gameplay to be much more important than graphics, so a review should focus on how the game plays and how it is designed. However, our website is arranged so that you can click the "Screens" link at the top of a review and immediately see all the screenshots we have for that game.

Q. Few of your favorite next-gen games?

Ans. I haven't played any Xbox 360 or PS3 games (the systems are still too expensive for me), but my favorite Wii games so far are Zelda and Excite Truck. I'm also really enjoying the Virtual Console service and have played some excellent classic games on there, like Link to the Past and Gunstar Heroes.

Q. Mostly, you have owned fifth and sixth generation consoles, don't you think you should score a next-gen console (anyone of three)?

Ans. I'm not sure what you mean. It's hard for me to compare Wii to Xbox 360 and PS3 because I only have one of them. I will probably buy the 360 as soon as the price drops, because it has several games I am eager to play, and more are coming. For right now, I am pretty satisfied with my Wii, DS, and PS2.

Q. As Nintendo says, gameplay is more important than graphics i.e. it's gameplay that sells game not graphics. Is it true?

Ans. Ah, you are saying two different things! From a critical point of view, gameplay is more important than graphics. But sometimes, graphics sell games because people don't have a chance to play a game before they buy it, so they base a decision on what they have seen in commercials or on the game box. That's part of why we write reviews, to help people learn more about the gameplay before buying a game.

Q. Future aspect of PC, fifth and sixth-gen games?

Ans. Speaking from the Wii perspective, I am looking forward to online games finally arriving (although they should have been ready from the start). I'm also anticipating the real, full games that don't feel like tech demos for the controller.

Q. Significance of Reviews?

Ans. This is a controversial topic, but I believe reviews have many purposes. Obviously they help people to decide which games are worth buying or renting. I think reviews are also a way for us gamers to build a language and a model of criticism so that we can all better understand the games we play. In particular, I focus on game design, and as I learn more about it, I try to examine games in that light so other people can also learn about game design and see their games in that respect. Finally, I think reviews are very important to send feedback to game developers and publishers and to help them learn to improve their future games or even make better decisions about which games are worth releasing at all. That's not just me feeling self-important; I know for a fact that publishers track review scores and that most developers carefully read reviews of their games to learn more about what they did right and wrong.

Don't miss few of his best reviews listed below:

1. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

2. Meteos: Disney Magic

3. Trauma Center: Second Opinion

4. Star Trek: Tactical Assault

5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
