Sony’s PlayStation 3 is in market and selling like hot cakes after a price drop, but PlayStation 2 remains to be best-seller with more than 120 million gaming consoles sold world-wide. Its new slim series with reduced weight is also making some news. PS 2 Slim units currently being distributed in Japan are known to be lighter than those currently available in market.

PS 2 Slim launched in 2004 was 1.1 inches tall, 23 inches wide and 6 inches deep, which makes it almost ¼ the size of original PS 2. It’s new internally modified SCPH-79000 line has lost some weight and now weighs around 600 grams, which is 300 grams less than original. Similarly, weight of the unit’s AC adapter has also been reduced by 100 grams. There is no change in appearance of the unit as changes are made internally.
There are few chances that weight change in unit’s will also lower manufacturing cost. Thus it is speculated that PS2 might see a final price cut to $99 before it is made history. PS 2 currently is selling for mere $129.99 and is selling very well. New titles will be released till 2008 or so, which makes sure that PS 2 will be hot favorite among the masses for years to come.
Price cut or not, PS 2 stands tall and can give any other gaming console run for its money. Though if it happens, then nothing like that. In India PS2 is currently being sold for Rs. 7600 and if price drop happens then it will be for Rs. 5000 (approx.).
