Well, well, well, the rumour mills are grinding again. This time folks, it is about Microsoft turning the heat on its rivals Apple and Sony. Actually, if that actually happens, it will be an attempt to kill two birds with one stone - well, if not kill then give a scare at least.

Rumours started doing rounds in the web since last week and now Xbox boss Peter Moore told Business Week that if MS were ever to make a handheld, it would most certainly include gaming along with music and video. Apple's blockbuster handheld iPod has all of them sans gaming and Sony's highly popular gaming handheld PlayStation Portable doesn't have anything other than gaming.
Moore said; "It can't just be our version of the iPod. I think the brand is an opportunity."
Sometime in 2004, there were rumours that MS was launching 'Xboxy' - a handheld gaming device that never became official. Anyway, since Moore even bothered to comment on the idea has actually fuelled the rumour mills into running overtime.
MS would not comment on the device yet or whether one is in development. However a MS rep quipped that 'MS is committed to innovation.'
MS with its Xboxes grabbed a good chunk of the console market pushing Nintendo to third position though still behind Sony. However, all this development was in a span of less than 4 years following MS's debut in the console market. Now Xbox 360 is pegged as the next-gen console that may actually beat Sony's next-gen console PS 3 slated to be released this year.
If at all MS comes out with the handheld (that is a certainty in my opinion), it would be interesting to see how Sony and Apple would react.
