Our friends at Microsoft have decided that you don’t need your old Xbox anymore and so they’ve announced that they won’t be repairing the outdated junk anymore. Microsoft acted real brave here as its rival is still capitalizing on a huge catalogue and cheap prices of PS2. As one would imagine, Microsoft wants you to dump that old thing and opt for the bigger and better Xbox 360 (even if you don’t want to). Microsoft will provide the services to those under warranty (which I bet aren’t many) and will continue providing other technical support, documents and content (which they stopped developing and updating a long ago). In Microsoft’s words:
Any other technical support, documents, and content, however, will continue to be available to all our customers. Although Microsoft is ending repair services for the Original Xbox, an upgrade program and support will be maintained for Original Xbox consoles that are still under Warranty. If you have an original Xbox console that is in Warranty that requires a repair, you will be able to submit an exchange request for an upgrade to Xbox 360 online.

It was about time I guess but I still wish Microsoft had made one last money grab by releasing an XBMC easy install kit. I use my original xbox with XBMC far more than I use my xbox 360 and I know that that kind of move would have stirred up a little action in the developer community. I guess if anything on my xbox breaks I’ll just have to tackle it myself, no biggie.
