consoles-3_52Wii sales have touched a new height, however, the PS3 sales are steady/stumpy. But get ready for the change. Yes! You’d be feeling dizzy, because if you throw an eye on the sales results for the month of May, you would find that Sony’s PS3 has pocketed a hefty financial loss due to the progressively soaring sales of Nintendo’s Wii. The PS3 had to accept a big trail from its nearest rival Wii by more than fivefold in Japan, last month.

The hardware sales results for the last month are mentioned below:

‘ Nintendo’s Wii: 251,794 units sold

‘ Sony PS3: 45,321 units sold

The last month results are nothing more than a nightmare for Sony. For several years, Sony officials have been betting the farm on the PS3 sales augmentation, but lost everything they had. Nevertheless, things are bound to change - the recent sales results show that the nine days wonder is over and Nintendo’s Wii is about to see a nose-dive in its sales figures as online retailers Amazon discloses the latest retail data.

The retail data has ranked Wii at second place, while Xbox360 stands at 16th place. The PS3 is the largest gainer that has taken a leap from 35th position to 26th place.

No matter, PS3 is still far behind Wii, but the brisk upsurge shows the momentum that PS3 sale has gained and it is alarming for both Wii as well as Xbox360. The mounting hardware sale is not only a good sign for Sony, but for the software developers as well, who were crestfallen due to the low PS3 sales.

Under-mentioned are few reasons that are major tributaries giving a push to the PS3 hardware sales:

‘ Sony has increased PS3 production to meet shipment target, expecting to ship 11 million consoles until April 2008

‘ Frequent PS3 Firmware updates (as Sony has released Firmware 1.82 update)

‘ Sony has boosted PS3 software development (around 400 new titles coming by March ‘08)

Now, if you ask why we should buy a heftily priced PS3 (even after having a petite difference in the graphics that both the consoles propose), the answer is ‘lasting appeal’. Undoubtedly, the Xbox360 is HD-DVD laden, but games still run in DVD9 format (HD-DVD is just for movies). Still, if you don’t find any difference between the graphics that both the consoles offer, you should take into account the storage measures that place the PS3 on top. DVD can hold approximately 9GB, HD-DVD 30GB, whereas Blu-ray 50GB, so obviously, technology with advantage is going to survive in the long run.

However, Xbox360 also seems losing the ground as its heatsink becomes ineffective in keeping the system cool. ‘Three Red Lights’‘fault is another downside that is rendering Microsoft anxious. For the reason, Microsoft has been receiving a huge number of consoles for repair, but due to the heavy arrival of spoiled consoles, the company has refused to get consoles patched.

Since, I am not to advocate the victory of PS3 or rout of Wii, what I am trying is to help you choose the best one that meets with your needs. If you think sales figure decides the winner, then it’s PS2 that should be crowned, because it sells more than every second console. What basically we want is gamer’s pleasure that might be bounded to any console, regardless of soaring/plunging sales figures.
