PlayStation 2 touches the 100 million, Sony grosses 20 billion!

Shipments of Sony's PlayStation 2 gaming console passed the 100 million mark on Tuesday. As we know, the console was launched first in Japan in March 2000 as a successor to Sony's PlayStation console. According to the company, it took five years and nine months for the PlayStation 2 to beat the original PlayStation to the 100-million mark by almost four years.

37.1 million and 22.2 million shipments were made in Europe and Asia respectively.

Now let's do a little a little math to see what it meant financially for Sony.

PS 2 Starter Bundle costs $177, Ultimate Accessory Bundle $246 and Fun Bundle with Bonus Controller $325 (all figures rounded up to the nearest dollar). If we assume that Sony sold an average PS2 is priced at even $200 then the total gross turnover is a whopping 200 X 100,000,000 = 20,000,000,000.

Twenty Billion Dollars!! (Remember, it is gross without taking cost of production, shipment, taxes, duties etc.)

One more passing thought: With that kind of numbers in sales for Sony, I don't know how Microsoft can beat Sony's PlayStations with its Xboxes in the near future. Not even in the next 15 years at least if this is the trend. What do you say?
