The PlayStation after its launch in December 1994 changed the way the world gamed. It went to create history by selling over 100 million units in less than eleven years, in the process becoming the first console in history to achieve this milestone.

That was then in 1994, and now in 2006, it has become a grandpa with two generations spawning with the PlayStation 3 scheduled to arrive later this year. So Sony has decided that it is time that the original PlayStation or the PS 1 as completed its life, a very eventful life and now it should retire.
The production of the PS 1 has been stopped in order to free up manufacturing resources for the upcoming PlayStation 3.
The PlayStation did for gaming that no other console before that could. It revolutionized gaming and single handedly introduced adults into gaming with games like WipeOut, Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider, etc. It also gave the gaming industry such a shot in the arm that it never had to look behind over the shoulder again. Besides, it is the console that led the foundation for the next-gen consoles like its grandson the PS 3.
Adieu PlayStation, we shall always remember you.
