With all the new phones out there (iPhone, Zune Phone, etc.), Sony just had to jump on the phone train as well. They have come out with the Playstation Phone, otherwise knows as the Sony Ericsson F305. The announcement was made just a couple days ago. From the picture you can see it’s similar to other Ericsson models but with one exception: the inclusion of the famous PS controller knobs ‘X’ and ‘O’.
In an article published by Yahoo, they quote Sven Totte, the head of Product Marketing as saying:
Gaming is no longer something you do on your own. It’s about having fun with your friends and interacting with the game. We have used motion sensor technology before in our phones and integrating it into game play is a natural progression.
The phone comes with 3 games by default (Bowling, fishing and Jockey) and features a dedicated PS key to get you straight into the action, a decent 2-inch screen, EDGE network capabilities and Memory Stick Micro. The phone is set to launch some time in September 2008.
From a marketing perspective, it would be unwise if Sony didn’t jump into the phone gaming market. Portable gaming is now the way of the future and combining that with the functionalities of a cell phone is even more convenient. I think with the launch of the iPhone, the whole industry has gone in a different direction. Apple really changed the ‘ball game’ by bringing large scale music portability to cell phones, and now as an indirect result, Sony is combining their two top divisions to make an all-in-one gaming product. I look forward to the variety of games that Sony could launch for this phone. Recently, Doom was released for the PSP, so maybe we can see a scaled down version on the F305 some time later.
