Sony has announced that the release of the PlayStation 3 is being delayed due to the threat of piracy. There were some concern about piracy before as discussed here, but it actually wasn't taken as a reason before that could delay its launch.
Anyway, the announcement came at the Taipei Game Show via Tetsuhiko Yasuda, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Asia. He told reporters of Japanese news company Mainichi that Sony would not launch the PS3 until it is sure that that counterfeiters won't be able to duplicate it.
He said;
We want to be completely prepared when we bring PlayStation 3 to the marketplace. Our No. 1 competition is not other companies but counterfeiters. We want to work with governments to stop this.
Anyway, PS3Focus.com got it right when it says,
As the Playstation 3 is equipped with a Blu-ray disc drive, Sony may be forced to wait until the problems with the AACS have been resolved before commiting to a release date for the PS3 console.
We fully agree to that.
