Sony Shiroishi Semiconductor, a subsidiary of Sony, has decided to up the monthly production capacity of blue-violet laser diodes, a key component of PS3. These diodes are used in making the pick-up heads (PUHs) of the HD-DVD and Blu-ray Discs. As their production increases, the manufacturing costs of PS3 might fall. DigiTimes claims that the fall in the production costs maybe as large as $100. Currently, the 60 GB version of PS3 is selling for $599, while the report claims that it takes $840 to manufacture.

There have been news of price cuts before. This time however, there might be some substance in these reports. Although, the prospects of Sony passing on the benefit of decreased costs to the gamers are very bleak, yet, this scenario is what most of the people, who just can't get beyond the sticker shock, are waiting for.
