You’d have thought that language identity would be the last factor to hurt the gaming industry. But then you’d have been so wrong. Quebec is going ahead with a ban on English-only gaming titles. It wants its gamers to be sold only French titles, if a French version of the game is available that is. And the funny thing is that the ban is only applicable on retail of video games. Despite the good intentions behind the ban – promotion and protection of the French language – it is being viewed as a pain by many. Retailers would obviously loose business as consumers head to other avenues to procure games. The law would also result into new games receiving delayed releases as developers try to come up with French versions. Here’s what Ronnie Rondeau, co-owner of the eight Game Buzz stores around Montreal, said in an interview on the Star:

If it (the ban) really was going to make a difference, I'd be for it, but only a small number of people want to play in French. The rest don't care.
