R18+ games or not? Australian public will decide

Australians have been going berserk over the whole issue of video-game violence for a while now (and to be fair to them, several other nations are ditto). The whole issue revolves around whether a category R18+ for video games should be created or not. A meeting of censorship ministers has been unable to decide that and so the matter now rests in the hands of Australian public.

That being said, it is still quite unclear as to how the public consultation over this question will be held. Matters are expected to clear up at the next week’s Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (SCAG) meeting, wherein a draft consultation paper is expected to be put up. Australia is the only developed country without an R18+ classification. As such several games are simply getting banned. The hue for an adoption of this classification has gone strong during recent times and several attorneys-generals are pushing for legislation.

Freedom of expression vs. protection of children has become a major question in the whole debate. The opposition to an R18+ legislation is that once passed, it will allow easy access for children to games with adult content. The whole process of legislation is quite complex and any changes to the censorship regime must be ratified by the Commonwealth and all state and territory attorneys-general. It is quite difficult to see an early end to this predicament but a resort to public opinion seems the surest way out.
