Robbie Bach, President of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, recently said,
The PSP is a reasonably successful product at the profit-and-loss level. But as a product concept, there are cautionary tales to learn from it...
While it is good at producing audio, it’s not a good music player because it doesn’t have local storage (except for flash memory slots). You can’t keep your music there. It has a beautiful screen, but you can only get the video under the Universal Media Disc format. That format hasn’t been successful.
On a game level, it has done well. But even there, it is mostly PlayStation 2 ports. There isn’t much original content..
While all this is true, the PSP is a successful gaming platform, it is still a decent media device. Besides the fact the format isn’t very good or you can’t store data, it isn’t a bad alternative for when you forget your iPod or other music device. Of course, we all buy the PSP for gaming? But it can still be used as an audio device which he shoots down from the beginning.
I believe that anyone who buys a gaming machine for musical purposes is a lunatic and side with Bach on that. Although if you buy it for gaming and occasionally use it for audio means, then there shouldn’t be a problem with that and there aren’t really any drawbacks to that if it is just short term. Have fun buying your PSPs, but buy them for the right reasons.
