RPG games delay in Xbox 360 may kill the console in Japan

Microsoft always fights an arduous battle when it comes to make their consoles penetrate the Japanese gaming market. However, no matter how much effort they have put on the launch of Xbox 360, it is going to remain the same as it was with Xbox in Japan. When it was launched this week, Xbox 360 had only 12 games that were backward compatible. To make things worse, Japanese gamers are now finding that some of the big Japanese developed titles have been delayed.

[EM]-eNCHANT arM, the big launch day RPG being developed by the Otogi team at From Software has been delayed from the Dec 10 launch until Jan 12, 2006. While it's only a month, that still means that suddenly the Xbox 360 is without any Role Playing Games in the land where the RPG is by far the most popular!

Then there is Rez/Lumines/Meteos creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi's latest title Ninety-Nine Nights. This Dynasty Warriors action game with 999 enemies onscreen at one time was originally set for a Jan 12, 2006 date, but the game is now being listed with a spring 2006 release date at several stores.

1up.com analyzed the possible fallout MS may face very well and says; 'All these little delays start to add up after a while and then suddenly the Japanese launch starts to become mainly Western-developed titles, which often don't sell all that well in Japan. What Microsoft really needed was a selection of high profile Japanese games at launch, and for a while they thought they had it. But after these delays it's going to be getting quite a bit tougher for the company to reel in the average Japanese gamer at launch. Hopefully these are the last of the launch window delays for the new system'.

Absolutely right, can't agree more on that. Without a solid RPG at launch, Xbox 360 may really bomb in Japan.
