Second Life gives Second Chance to Paralyzed

Taylor FlattJun 30 2008

A while back, a man who has been paralyzed for over 30 years had the chance to walk again. But this time, he is walking virtual. Just imagining that he is walking, helmet sensors pick up the brain waves sent and he is able to walk a character through Second Life without a mouse or keyboard. This could be a very helpful rehabilitation product to be used worldwide for patients who have issues such as this Japanese man. This is definitely not the first helmet that senses brainwaves and then applies them to a virtual world, but this is the first practical one. Next for the Japanese team is a system to allow patients to create text messages by mentally selecting letters. This could be the step for making typing faster, and more efficient. By just thinking you can silently send text messages to your friends in class, at work, or in the car. Cellphones may never be the same again.
