Rumors are all around that Sega is entering into the gaming market. But finally, Sega has confirmed that now the company is not working on the Dreamcast 2 and the patent is filled only to protect the copyright of a possible future console.
Rumors first began circulating when Sega revealed its updated Dreamcast trademark with a selection of seemingly random tech terms like ‘floor pads’ and ‘flash memory cards’. Last August, Sega filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office to protect the Dreamcast trademark. Now Sega has filed a new application to protect the trademark Dreamcast; sparking rumors that the Japanese publisher is planning to make a shock return to the console manufacturing market with the Dreamcast 2.
When asked for an official comment on the patent and possibility of Dreamcast 2, PR Director of Sega of America, Charlie Scibetta stated:
...the company is very happy being a platform agnostic company and have moved up the ranks the past three years from #11 to #9, and now stand at #6 in terms of our market share by units among third-party publishers. The company will stick on current strategy and it has no plans to change in the middle of this outstanding growth.
The console was launched in November 1998 and designed to be a successor to the established Sega Saturn. The Dreamcast was withdrawn from production in March 2001, and Sega left the console game to focus on software.
