Sony outlines plans for its PS3 online service

Sony has outlined plans for its new online gaming service for its upcoming next-gen console - the PlayStation 3.

The service will enable users to download games and other content direct to the console's hard drive.

So, when the PS3 is finally launched (my bet is that it will launch this December in Japan and maybe early January in North America) the online offering is most certainly going to give some serious challenge to rival Microsoft's Xbox Live.

Anyway, the details were revealed at the Games Developers Conference in San Jose. This was announced by Phil Harrison, president of worldwide studios for Sony Computer Entertainment at the event.

Now the Wi-Fi connecting 6 players in the PS 3 that had been talked about in the past is now passe. The point was well swallowed by Sony that without an online service, it can never hope to rival the Xbox 360 in what I would call - the war of next generation.
