After introducing a cheaper version of the console, the sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 have given boost to North America. The company stated that combines sales of older 80G-byte model and the new 40GB model have been increased by 192 percent at the top-10 major retailers in North America.
The higher number of sales is good news for Sony, which is running in the third place in the console battle in the US. According to an estimate from NDP group, Sony had shipped 121,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in October. While the market leading Nintendo Wii shipped 19,000 units and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 shipped 366,000 units. After seeing poor sales of PlayStation 3, the company has reduced the price of the 80G-byte model from US$599 to US$499, and introduced a cheaper US$399 version on November 2, 2007.
However, the company is likely to increase losses in the company’s gaming business. The company is looking to increase market share and boost the number of software titles available to make up these losses on future game software sales. In another report, the national advertising campaign will see commercials air on several TV networks including NBC, Fox and the ESPN cable sports channel.
