Guys at Sony are no fans of Nintendo’s DS, or more recently of DSi. Well that’s understandable of course. Also understandable is the little jibe that SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller has taken after last week’s launch of Nintendo DSi. In a statement to Engadget, Koller said some really nice things about PSP and some not so nice things about DSi. Dismissing Nintendo’s handheld as something exclusive for the “kids” market, he said that DSi ignored “Significant gamer demographic groups.” He also went on to say that external publishers are unlikely to do well with the limited opportunities that they have on DSi. This, he said, is in sharp contrast to the PSP, which has a host of titles in the offing from “our publishing partners.” Koller added:

Games such as Rock Band Unplugged from MTV Games, Assassin’s Creed from Ubisoft, Dissidia Final Fantasy from Square Enix, and Hannah Montana from Disney demonstrate the commitment that publishers have to the PSP.

So much for the talk, but the fact is that PSP ain’t walkin all that well; at last count, Nintendo DS had sold twice as many units as Sony’s PSP. And I’m sure we’d soon have something to hear from the opposite camp. The war of words is just beginning, of that you can be pretty sure. Wonder if PSP2 will have some substance to back that talk?
