It’s almost a year now since the XBox killer was launched and I don’t think there is something wrong if gaming nerds are asking for a PS3 price-cut. Surprisingly, many rumors surfaced earlier, but were mere hollow claims. Finally, saying goodbye to all the hearsays, Sony has announced a price-cut for the PS3 by $100. Not only that, beefed-up PS3 version is also in the pipeline i.e. the company has decided to bring 80GB version of the console.
Beginning in August, the low-priced PS3 will be sold in North America for $499 or $100 below the original price. In conjunction with this, the higher version with 80GB hard drive will be shipping to the region at a suggested price of $599, and MotorStorm will be given away as a freebie with 80GB console.
This is what all PS3 owners were anticipating for so long and finally the company got its price trimmed down by about 17% (less than its original price) so as to boost console’s dying sales.
At present, Wii has outsold all other consoles in the market. The low price ($250) and motion-sensing remote controller makes the console shine. On the contrary, other two in the market, however are HD graphics laden; but don’t withstand Wii’s promising sales.
This news comes after a weekend of comicality, all stemming from a leaked Circuit City advertisement. No doubt, we were hoping for both offerings sooner than later, but not both together. Both are not less than a big gift anyone gets on his birthday, because it’s just a week back when Sony officially denied to bring an immediate price-cut to the PS3.
Will $100 price-drop be able to accelerate PS3’s low-hanging sales?
As compared to PS3’s 60GB version, 80GB version at $499 seems priced more aptly, because its neighboring rival Xbox Elite is priced ($479), just $20 less than 80GB PS3. So, there are possibilities that ‘the trick’ could work.
For some people, getting a SIXAXIS with rumble controls cold be another reason behind scoring an 80GB PS3, because enhanced PS3 is expected to bring rumbling controller with it. Therefore, this is another freebie that a customer would get with 80GB PS3, as it ships to the retailer stores this August.
Hence, by introducing bigger hard-drives, both the developers have kicked off next ‘next-gen war.’
Good-luck to all!
