Though many had written off Nintendo’s Wii before it’s release in mid November 2006, when it had to compete with the simultaneously launched Sony PS3 and the early bird Microsoft’s xbox 360, it is Nintendo, thats having the last laugh while its gaming console Wii outsells the PS3 4 to 1. Now lets forget about Microsoft’s xbox 360 which is nowhere near the PS3, not to mention the market leader Wii. Nintendo’s Wii sold 331627 units as compared to 89131 units of Sony’s ps3 in the four weeks leading to Feb 24th this year. So what is driving the considerably cheaper Wii, at $249 in comparison to the PS3 starting at $499, to take top honours in the ultra competitive console gaming segment. First of all, while the PS3 was targeted only the hard core console gamers, the Wii ventured off the beaten path and created a whole new set of casual gamers with its innovative fun to play titles like ‘Super Smash Bros Brawl’ and Wii fit. The Wii’s revolutionary controller design with unique motion sensitive gameplay reinforced the fun element to Wii gaming and made up for Wii’s lack of high definition graphics.
This combined with Wii’s affordabilty have made it a tough to beat proposition for its competitors. Meanwhile, Sony which is seeking to regain leadership in the gaming market with it’s PS3 is poised to launch exclusive PS3 titles like puzzle solving and the community based game ‘littlebigplanet’, will find it difficult to ouster the innovative Wii from it’s top perch unless it comes up with some radical innovation of its own. But knowing Sony and Howard, expect it to bounce back in 2008 an pull off a huge surprise.
