Women DO play video games; nothing about this can be more evident from the fact than a recent survey conducted by JWT which showed that more women owned game consoles over men. While it has been a well known fact that women spend a large amount of time on internet gaming sites and game parlors it is a salient fact that ladies also find it worthwhile to invest in a hardcore gaming device such as a game console.Until now, that is....
A person who loves to play games will tell you that nothing beats the thrill of playing a game on a console such as the Playstation or the Gamecube or even the Xbox. With an increased array of graphics and easier game play and control options a game console beats playing on a computer any day. Ladies have realized that the thrill of playing in a parlor can be brought home for as little as a hundred dollars. Working women too know that after a hard days work, instead of doing something else a small helping of 'Mario' and 'The Sims' can actually prove to be a lot of fun and relaxing.

While game developers have for long been devoted to their loyal fan base and have continuously produced male oriented games like 'The Tom Clancy series' or the recently released 'Halo 3', they have been working for long to produce unisex games such as 'The Sims',' The Rayman series' and of course strategy games such as 'The Age Of Empires'. Apart from obvious increases in sales gaming companies also view this as a good move simply because it brings in younger ladies at world gaming events. The World Cyber Games held in Monza, Italy brought in a fairly large amount of women participants as compared to before.
Console sales have increased like never before during the past 18 months among women especially because of Nintendo's revolutionary game play device known simply as the 'Wii'; ladies enjoy playing with the wii simply because it's interface doesn't operate like a standard joystick console. Holding a wii in one's hand allows the game characters to move according to the hand movements of the controller, this is in huge contrast to the earlier control which featured players having to push or rotate buttons on the joystick.

The wii has enriched the gamer's experience making one more involved with the game. Seizing this opportunity gaming companies have begun to produce exclusive female oriented games with themes like dancing and karaoke. Even themes like racing and sport have been taken over by the wii with the wii replacing the steering wheel and the racket in racket sports. It's no wonder then that ladies choose a game of racing on their Xbox's instead of the F1 circuit!
The console market is also enlarged by the hand held market with devices such as the PSP and the Nintendo DS in addition to the pre existing Gameboy series. These devices though not as popular as connected consoles, are slowly making a mark with many young girls in Japan and other Asian countries playing with them. Europe is an emerging hotspot for the hand held market so much so that designer labels have opted to produce specially drafted designer bags for the PSP and the DS and are sold as handy accessories.
So the next time you see a woman pulling out a PSP from her handbag instead of lipstick or playing 'Tekken' on her X-BOX instead of baking a cake in her microwave, don't be surprised!
