audiodyssey_GP4Ju_2263Researchers in Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Singapore-based Gambit Game Lab have been working on a game to improve competition between people with vision problems. The game they have been working on relies solely on your ability to hear and move the controller. This game is going to be coming out for the Wii, meaning that you must you the sensor controllers to control your movement when playing. It can also be used with a keyboard for those players who don’t have a Wii.

This game that the researchers have been working on astounds me. I have a friend who is really bad at seeing and refuses to wear glasses and he has to get literally a foot to half a foot away from the screen to play games. When we play chess, he just has to memorize the pieces positions and what he moved last, but that doesn’t always work and he has problems seeing. But with this game, I think he would have much more fun trying to play along with us rather than expending more energy and frustration trying to see the game.

The name of the game is AudiOdyssey and you are meant to keep in beat while playing as a DJ in a club. You play as Vinyl Scorcher, a new DJ, and you are supposed to keep the beat while clubbers dance to your music. If you get really good and do everything right, you might even be able to start freestylin’ whereas if you screw up a lot, the people in the club are going to get a little restless and who knows what will happen.

AudiOdyssey was created by the MIT specialists for a few main reasons. Here are the main points of which they created the game;

1) The visually-impaired and the sighted can enjoy the same level and quality of gameplay.
2) Navigate game’s menus with ease and efficiency approaching that of conventional UIs.
3) Create a fun and natural control scheme using the Wiimote.
4) An engaging game that relies more on high quality audio than visuals.

This new game seems to be touching bases that other games like it haven’t hit yet. I’ve always wanted to play as a DJ, rather than a dancer for once, and now I will have my chance once I figure out the release date for this prototype. Although you can download the installer for the current game, which is not done, it is still going to be an awesome, jam packed, game.
