When we first heard about WiiWare, we were sure that it’s just a rumor, but instantly, it turned out true. WiiWare is actually a new software development tool for the Nintendo Wii. You can also compare it with Xbox Live and PSN, because more or less, it takes after both the online services provided by Microsoft and Sony, respectively.
WiiWare is a download service for the Wii with original game downloads. The service will be available for both established game companies and independent developers. Certainly, the independent developers will get a chance to create something new and original for Nintendo’s Wii.
Nintendo’s Reggie Fils Aime has this to say about the new service:
Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit. WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners.
Apart from assigning games to the independent developers, Nintendo will also be determining the price of the game on a per-title basis. But, for the rating, it will have to look towards ESRB. The new service is likely to outlaw ‘A-Only’ rated content, so don’t hang around for Manhunt II on Wii through WiiWare.
Surely, Nintendo has opened the doors for the developers with smaller budgets; in return, the studios would also enjoy developing games for Nintendo’s futuristic console.
WiiWare will be posted on the Wii Shop Channel from which users will be able to download titles for some Wii Points. You will be able to download a cluster of new downloadable games sometime next year.
