Woo hoo! EA confirms 'The Simpsons Game'

Let me state at the outset, I'm a huge fan of The Simpsons. The longest running and the most loved cartoon family of all time is set to star in a movie due for release this year. Now, Electronic Arts has jumped on the bandwagon and confirmed that a game based on the cartoon series would be launched later this fall.

The working title of the game is 'THE SIMPSONS GAME,' (how imaginative, indeed.) The newest title announced by EA would be the 22nd title based on the Simpsons, but it would be first ever by the company, which acquired the license from Vivendi in November 2005. EA unveiled the game officially at The Simpsons 400th episode party on May 8. It would be launched on Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. The release would coincide with the releade date of Simpsons' movie on the home video.

Plot

EA has promised that all the family members will be playable, each with their own levels and unique abilities. The game will have 16 levels (EA calls them 'Episodes', another instance of their originality) and will be played over the entire Springfield and worlds beyond! The story goes something like this; few minutes into the game, the Simpsons realize that they are trapped inside a video game. They will use their newfound freedom to come up with new powers for themselves. For instance, Bart becomes Bartman and Homer a Katamari style Homerball.

The third-person game will even feature a cooperative multiplayer mode. The storyline has been written by the TV show's writers exclusively for the game, so expect something new. It even features voiceovers from the original crew. The plot will take a dig at the existing video game culture, including the EA. A number of posters at the official announcement bore scenes from GTA, Batman Begins and Medal of Honor. Homer in a parody of games, this will be something worth watching.

The graphics would attempt at recreating the visual style of the TV sitcom. It would be really interesting to see how EA manages to capture the 2D environ from multiple angles.

Here is what the Executive Producer of the project, Scot Amos said at the announcement:

Our goal in developing THE SIMPSONS GAME is to create the most original game ever, which is a lofty goal and only possible given the close collaboration with 'The Simpsons' creative team. We're also especially proud of the game's warm visual feel, which captures - for the first time ever in a game - the look of the TV show.

It will hit the shops this autumn. I know what Mr. Burns would say, 'Excellent...'
